Allrighty then, I must be losing my mind. All I ever wanted to do was play guitar in a rock & roll Band. Now I've built a custom guitar cabinet!!?? I wanted a vertical 2 x 12 sealed back cabinet. One that would sit neatly under my little 1984 Blonde Super Sixty Watt Boogie Mark IIC 1 x 12 combo. I also wanted a slant on the top half of the cab akin to the Marshall top 4 x12 cab, so the sound would project upwards. I decided to try my hand at building one.
The 3/4" 11ply Birch cab finished out at 19" w x 30" t x 13"d (at the bottom / 11" at the top). These measurements adhere closely to the "Golden Ratio" for speaker enclosures. The 2 x 12" 8 ohm Celestion drivers, English made Greenbacks are wired in series giving a 16 ohm load. The speakers are front mounted using T- nuts and bolts to secure them to the baffle, which is 3/4" 11 ply Birch also.. The grill is made from 1/2" MDF and some left over cloth I had from 1985 when I re-covered a 4 x12 cab to use under the Boogie. I had 1 inch more grill cloth than I needed to cover the front! Close one! The cab is glued and screwed except for the speaker baffles which are currently only screwed together and in, so I can try some other combinations of speakers and not have to rip the cabinet apart. I used 3/4" x 1 1/2" finished fir for the interior bracing.
So how does it sound? Tight Articulate low end even with extreme overdrive settings. Mid to high to low end balance is extremely even. Angled top speaker has a nice focus point about 6 to 8 feet out in front of cabinet. Clean settings have a bell like quality and when hit hard sound slightly compressed, yet open. Overall it sounds fantastic.
